This is one of only seven North Carolina counties allowed to charge a local land transfer tax, under special legislation. At 1.2 percent all in, it costs six times more than the rest of the state, where only the 0.2 percent state excise applies.

“Perquimans County is one of only seven counties in North Carolina that levies a local excise tax on the transfer of real estate. The land transfer tax equals $1.00 per $100.00 ... The other counties that levy a land transfer tax are: Camden, Chowan, Currituck, Dare, Pasquotank and Washington.”
