About Transfer Tax Lookup

What this site is
Transfer Tax Lookup is a set of free calculators that estimate the real estate transfer tax due when a property is sold, for all 50 states, Washington DC, and 216 cities and counties that add their own tax.
It is an independent site run by one person. It is not affiliated with any state, county, or city government, and it is not a law firm, title company, or tax adviser.
How the numbers are checked
- Each rate is taken from the state statute and then compared with what the collecting agency currently applies. When the two disagree, the page uses the amount actually collected and explains the difference in a highlighted box. Massachusetts, Washington, Philadelphia, New Jersey, Nebraska and Rhode Island all have such differences today.
- Every page links to the statute and the agency page it was built from.
- City and county pages add up every layer that applies (state, county and city), so the total is the amount for that one place.
- Where no official source exists for a figure, the site does not publish one. West Virginia's county rates are an example: there is no official statewide table, so the state page shows the legal range instead of a guess.
- Every page shows the date it was last checked. Several local tables change more than once a year, so pages are re-checked every quarter.
Limits
The results are estimates. Exemptions, credits and negotiated splits between buyer and seller can change the amount, and your closing agent or the county recorder issues the final figure. Nothing here is legal or tax advice.
Found a mistake?
If a figure is out of date or wrong, please email [email protected] with the page and, if you can, a link to the official source. Corrections are checked against that source, and the page and its "Verified" date are updated.
How the site is paid for
The calculators are free and need no account. The site may show advertising from Google AdSense to cover its costs. Advertisers have no say over the figures.
